That was almost 40 more unemployed than in September and about 550 more than the previous year, Mevlüt Kücükyasar, head of the AMS office in Wiener Neustadt said on Monday: “Crisis-related unemployment has been falling since mid-April, but without offsetting the growth of the previous months to be able to. With the current figures for October, it should be noted that the increase in absolute figures can be explained by seasonal unemployment, “says Kücükyasar:” Compared to the same point in the previous year, the increase in unemployment related to the crown is around 550. This means that we are well below the maximum of April, where we had an increase of 2,600 unemployed compared to the previous year. “
The latest unemployment rate was 10.1 percent, which is the second highest value in Lower Austria; the national average is 8.0 percent.
Positive signs in children
According to Kücükyasar, there is a positive trend in youth unemployment. In April there was an increase in youth unemployment of around 85 percent. Meanwhile, the rise in unemployment has fallen to 27 percent. “It is very gratifying that despite the crisis, with good advice, consistent job placement and suitable offers, we have managed to reduce youth unemployment in Wiener Neustadt.”
Increase in long-term unemployment
The head of AMS is currently concerned about the rise in long-term unemployment: around 1,400 people are currently registered with AMS Wiener Neustadt who have been registered as unemployed for more than a year, an increase of 31 percent compared to the year previous. Kücükyasar: “The biggest challenge for the labor market will be to counteract the solidification of unemployment. We must and will do everything possible to stop the rise in long-term unemployment. “
Decrease in employment
The labor market crisis also had negative effects on the number of employees, which at present can only be estimated. Since March there has been a decrease in the number of employees. In terms of sectors, the largest increases in registered unemployment were recorded in the construction sector at the end of October (+ 30%), followed by the production of goods (+ 20%).
Short-term job
According to Kücükyasar, it is gratifying that many more companies can get by without the third phase of Corona’s short-term work. Although there are no reliable figures yet, significantly fewer short-time job applications were received in October. It remains to be seen how the current lockdown will affect short-term work and unemployment.
