The collision occurred around 9:30 pm on a straight section of highway B2 between Vitis and Großrupprechts. The driver of the car was driving from Vitis in the direction of Großrupprechts when, for an unknown reason, he collided with a minibus traveling from Germany to Romania with 15 people. As a result of the impact, the car was thrown into the adjacent field and stopped on the wheels, the minibus stopped after about 30 meters on the shoulder of the road.
Based on the information provided by the rescuers, an important alarm was immediately activated for the fire, rescue and police forces. Six fire brigades with various hydraulic rescue devices, five rescue transport vehicles, three emergency medical vehicles and several police patrols were at the scene within minutes.
Handlebar stuck in vehicle
The driver of the car was trapped in his vehicle as a result of the violent collision. Due to the severe deformation of the body, the emergency services had to access the seriously injured handlebars through the roof. Using a special tool, the firefighters made a 1×1 meter hole in the roof of the vehicle, through which they were able to gently rescue the driver and hand him over to the emergency doctor. They then took him to Horn’s hospital.
The minibus driver and two passengers were slightly injured and treated by the Red Cross at the scene. The passenger suffered serious injuries and had to be transferred to St. Pölten University Hospital. Meanwhile, the remaining eleven inmates were taken to safety on a bus and then transferred to the Vitis municipal office. From there, the police organized the trip with a replacement bus.
After the police recorded the accident, the vehicles involved in the accident were removed by the fire services. Finally, firefighters cleared the road of leaking equipment and vehicle parts.
About 100 firefighters are on duty
A total of 100 members of the Großrupprechts, Vitis, Heinreichs, Nonndorf, Waidhofen / Thaya and Schrems (Gmünd district) fire departments were on duty. The Red Cross was on the scene with five rescue transport vehicles from Waidhofen / Thaya, Gmünd and Allentsteig, with three ambulance vehicles from Waidhofen / Thaya, Gmünd and Zwettl, as well as several first responders.
The police were also on duty with various patrols. The B2 was closed to all traffic during operations. A local diversion was installed. The mission ended after about 3.5 hours.
Advance maneuvers as a trigger
The accident was likely caused by an overtaking maneuver by the driver, a 29-year-old from the Waidhofen district, despite oncoming traffic, the Lower Austrian state police department reported to the APA on Monday morning. A 37-year-old Romanian national was at the wheel of the minibus with a trailer.
According to the police, Lower Austria freed from the wreck by firefighters was in mortal danger. The seriously injured person in the minibus was a 34-year-old Romanian.
