Personnel decisions are with the Greens after
The government is not yet in sight, but a change of leadership cannot be ruled out. It is different with the ÖVP, it has many new publications to distribute.
The Vienna elections and the SPÖ’s decision to work in a coalition with the Neos are currently forcing the municipal parties to realign. The Greens, in particular, have to reorganize after the dilemma of being ousted from the government after ten years despite a record result. The ÖVP, in turn, has many additional functions to assign thanks to its strong earnings. Here the carousel of guards has already picked up speed.
The Viennese Greens currently have little to celebrate: the decision of Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and his comrades to try a red-rose premiere instead of a red-green remake gave the Greens a real impact.
Is it going to be a green leadership debate?
The way things will go in the State party, which has to focus on opposition politics for at least five years, is currently fully open. This also includes the fate of party leader and still deputy mayor Birgit Hebein. Because he is, so it is rumored, despite the better electoral result, everything but firmly in the chair, after he could not keep his party in the city government. At least the Greens have so far managed to avoid a public debate on leadership.
As is well known, Hebein officially issued the line that the doors for negotiations with the SPÖ would remain open if it didn’t work out with the Neos, which the Greens don’t really expect. In any case, very timely green decisions are not expected, not even on whether the current club boss, David Ellensohn, will remain in office or will take over one of the two non-executive municipal council positions to which the Greens are entitled. Peter Kraus, second on the list, is also considered a candidate for city council. Hebein could also become a city councilor.
In case Hebein (currently in home quarantine as a K1 contact person for a corona-infected person, but according to the party spokesperson, she tested negative herself) politically, Kraus and Ellensohn are named successors in the part higher. That would not be illogical, because after all, the two of them had competed for the top candidate against Hebein in the long voting process. But it’s not set in stone that one of us gets a chance, one hears at the party.
Clarity on all these questions, as well as on the division of roles of the future 16 instead of ten deputies, will be created before November 24, when the municipal council is reconstituted. Of course, decisions could also be made in advance, but probably not next week, according to the Greens.
ÖVP distributes articles
In comparison, the ÖVP has almost “luxury problems”: due to its strong earnings, there are many additional items to distribute. And the club, which goes from seven to 22 leaders, is also restructuring. Former non-executive councilor Markus Wölbitsch will become the club’s boss. “The trend is going there,” the party said when asked for appropriate media reports.
The former president of the club, Elisabeth Olischar, could in turn occupy one of the two non-executive positions of the city council or become the second president of the city council; now the ÖVP is also entitled to this position. The turquoise will also represent the second speaker of the state parliament in the future. The names Ingrid Korosec, long-term term and senior union boss, or Manfred Juraczka, former party leader and club president, are currently mentioned here. For example, the current member of the National Council and security spokesman Karl Mahrer, who was a candidate on the Viennese list and for whom the transfer to the city council would be facilitated, especially financially, is the second councilor.
The party officially maintains a low profile. “No comment,” a spokesperson said when asked. The turquoise dice should finally fall at committee meetings that are scheduled for November 12.
The FPÖ, which has been severely decimated as a result of the elections, has already made the most important personnel decisions. Party leader Dominik Nepp will not become city councilor, former councilor Maximilian Krauss will take over the club.
