Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder urgently warned of the consequences of the growing corona infection in a government statement. “Corona is everywhere,” Söder said. “If we do nothing, the consequences are dramatic.”
All the fears have come true. In many regions, the pandemic is out of control. Bavaria is also “completely covered again”. The second wave is here and it is worse than before. “Development is skyrocketing,” Söder continued.
“It reaches hospitals everywhere,” the prime minister said. Occupied Covid beds would have increased by 70 percent in Bavaria. Nursing staff will soon reach their limits too. If the care of crown patients cannot be guaranteed, even though the number of intensive care beds has increased compared to spring, then the risk to patients increases significantly again.
“Some have not yet understood the seriousness of the situation”
“Some have not yet understood the seriousness of the situation,” Söder said. It would not be good if the death of others were available for convenience or hedonism. “There are countless destinations behind every number.”
The only way to curb the number of infections is to shut down public life. “It’s a blocking light,” Söder explained. The priority is to keep schools and nurseries open.
Police controls? “Of course not in the apartment”
Söder also addressed the question of how violations of the provisions should be controlled privately. Other parties had interpreted the prime minister’s remarks on Thursday as if Söder was pleading for a complaint among neighbors, which the State Chancellery in Munich immediately denied.
In the government statement, Söder said that the police would check whether the mask requirement was met in public spaces. “Not in the apartment, of course. No changes are planned.” There is also no call for advice.
On Thursday, the Bavarian government said the police would have no new powers to control contact restrictions. Rather, it is about how to react to the reports of others in the event that public order is disturbed. However, as it is now, the police can act in case of obvious violations of the protection against infections and, for example, dissolve the prohibited parts, even in private homes.
