In the important state of Florida, Joe Biden and Donald Trump once again met in a long-distance duel in the presidential election campaign (read SPIEGEL’s cover story here). In light of the persistently high number of corona infections, the Democratic nominee lashed out at the president. Its main events are “super spreading events” in which Trump not only distributes viruses, but also discord in the country.
Biden performed in front of a small crowd in Coconut Creek Village near Miami: Visitors had arrived in about 200 cars. They always had to be close to their cars to comply with the distance rules. The former vice president took Trump’s policy on the crown very seriously: “He says the end is near, that (the virus) will disappear. That we will learn to live with him. No, he hopes we learn with him. Die,” Biden shouted to his followers.
Trump was giving a campaign speech in Tampa at the same time. At the event, as in recent days, thousands of people crowded in front of the stage, many of them without masks. Trump scoffed that Biden’s events weren’t so small because of Corona, but because nobody wanted to go. “I think how many people come, that’s the final poll, and based on that, we will win on Tuesday.”
Elections will be held in the United States on Tuesday. In most polls, Biden is ahead, also due to dissatisfaction with Trump’s handling of the Corona crisis. The pandemic killed more than 225,000 people in the United States. Trump claims that his crisis management could have prevented millions of deaths. Biden accuses Trump of failing, accusing him of being responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of American citizens.
On Thursday, John Hopkins University reported for the first time more than 90,000 new infections per day in the United States. Rural areas in the north and center of the country are particularly affected. Regardless of the situation, Trump ruled out far-reaching new restrictions on public life in the United States. “We will never do a blockade again,” he announced, referring specifically to the restrictions announced in Germany and France. Biden repeatedly accuses Trump that he still has no plans to fight him, even more than six months after the pandemic started.
