In front of the empty stands at Rotterdam’s De Kuip Stadium, WAC got off to a lightning start, aided by the non-indisputable whistles of Serbian referee Srdjan Jovanovic, who twice decided penalties for guests for foul play in the first 15 minutes. Liendl used both penalties (4th, 13th). Eric Botteghin and Bart Nieuwkoop had received yellow cards for their fouls.
After the intermediate goal by Steven Berghuis (53rd) and in full emergency phase for the Rotterdamers, Liendl (60th) made the final decision in favor of the guests after a counterattack and two attempts rejected on the sidelines. Dejan Joveljic scored six minutes later with the third penalty of the match. The WAC thus ended the successful streak of coach Dick Advocaat’s team after 20 competitive matches in a row without a loss.
WAC EL leaders after 4-1 in Rotterdam
Wolfsberg sensationally defeated Feyernoord Rotterdam in Group K 4-1 away.
With four points from two games, WAC leads Group K ahead of Moscow (2) and Dinamo Zagreb (2). The Croats drew 0-0 in Moscow on Thursday. Feyenoord is currently in last place with one point from two games. In the third group match, WAC will face Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia on November 5 (9:00 PM).
Focus on Liendl
Unlike the 1-1 draw against Moscow, when the Carinthians had already conceded the 0-1 in the fifth minute, this time they started dreamy under the continuous rain in Rotterdam: referee Jovanovic decided in the third minute after a Brazilian foul Botteghin on Christopher Wernitznig from a penalty, which Liendl converted in a sovereign way, as he did against ZSKA.
Just eight minutes later, Wernitznig had another spectacular knockdown after barely visible contact with Nieuwkoop in the penalty area, and again there was a penalty for WAC, which Liendl used again with a perfect shot from the right corner. The WAC captain also stood out on defense when he hit a massive header from Bryan Linssen and thus avoided the next goal (18th). Immediately before the break, Linssen chased the ball into the clouds.
Otherwise, coach Ferdinand Feldhofer’s team did not allow anything worthy of note before the break. Feyenoord’s possession football was simply too unimaginative against the disciplined and strong Wolfsbergers. However, the hosts were missing seven players through injury.
Host urgency phase
During the break, Advocaat switched from four to three in a chain. Feyenoord not only became more offensive, but also much more dangerous. New Luciano Narsingh also quickly refueled on the left side and put Berghuis back on, cutting him to 1: 2 with his seventh goal of the season.
Feyenoord’s chances continued every minute, with Linssen again failing miserably twice (55th, 59th / completely free with his head) and once saved pole for goalkeeper Alexander Kofler (55th). A header from Lutsharel Geertruida also whistled just past the crossbar (56th). A little later, Kofler parried a shot by Berghuis (58th).
Liendl’s third trick
In this urgent phase, Feldhofer decided to change and made the right decision: Matthäus Taferner was the Kai Stratznig European Cup rookie. And the 18-year-old started on the left like the firefighters, but failed because of goalkeeper Justin Bilyov. But the ball reached Liendl, who finished perfectly to make it 3-1 for the WAC.
The third penalty that night was a real gift from Jovanovic, who only had one chance due to a coronavirus illness from Ukrainian referee Mikola Balakin who was originally destined for the game. Because Biljow was faster on the ball with his fist in the aerial battle with Serbian Joveljic, but the referee decided in favor of his compatriot, who this time Liendl yielded. Joveljic also hit the corner and made the feeling perfect.
Voices for the game:
Ferdinand Feldhofer (WAC Trainer): “A historic evening. A big compliment to the guys for how they performed today, especially in the first half, what they put into practice and invested. Consequently, they then worked very hard for the victory and finally won deservedly. Of course, after the break after 1: 2 we were lucky to create this feeling. “
Michael Liendl (WAC captain and three-time scorer): “That is, of course, extraordinary. After I’m no longer 20, that probably won’t happen to me that often either. So I am very, very happy to carry that with me. Of course it is a classic phrase, but that can only be done through equipment. We have shown for more than 90 minutes that we are an incredible team, that we have an excellent team spirit in the team. We all work very, very well. And then something like that happens at the end. “
Dick advocaat (Feyenoord coach): “We didn’t lose because of the referee. It’s our fault. We played very badly in the first half and we slept sometimes. But yeah, this man (the referee, note) was a drama. Two of the three 911s were certainly not warranted. But there is no point in scolding the referee. “
“We should have played smarter. After the connecting gate we should have done not only 2: 2, but also 3: 2. We really showed a good reaction after the break, but then we hit 3-1. Passing the Europa League now will be difficult, even if there are still four games to play. “
