“We have to act now!”

The federal and state governments have decided to clamp down on the corona pandemic. Chancellor Merkel speaks of tough and stressful measures. And he is not alone in that.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and the country’s leaders spent more than four hours negotiating the new crown measures. In the early afternoon he announced far-reaching measures. Due to the increasing number of corona infections, Germany is in an “acute national health emergency”.

In discussing the crown crisis, the federal and state governments agreed to massive temporary restrictions on public life, similar to that of spring. Among other things, contact restrictions will apply from Monday, events will be largely banned, restaurants and pubs will close again, as well as fitness studios and cinemas. “Now a national effort is needed in November,” Merkel said, speaking of tough and stressful measures. What specific measures apply from November 2, can be read here in detail.

75 percent of the infection rate in Germany can no longer be traced, Merkel said. The German health system remains efficient. However, if the rate of infection is maintained, it will reach the limit in a week. The number of people receiving treatment in intensive care units for corona is increasing significantly. “Today is a difficult day. We know what we expect from people.” But: “We have to act, and now,” said the Chancellor.

The seven-day incidence is expected to drop to 50

Religious services, however, are exempt from the event ban, as Merkel announced when asked by a journalist. But ask that the hygiene rules be observed there. Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder, who was also present at the press conference, added that freedom of religion and assembly is a great good.

When asked by a journalist how it should be decided at the end of November that the measures can be ended again, Merkel replied that health authorities must be able to trace the chains of infection again. This is the case, for example, if the seven-day incidence returns to 50 new infections per 100,000 population. Merkel also announced that she would increase staffing in health departments, including Bundeswehr soldiers.

Söder called the decisions “a bitter pill.” He spoke of a “four-week therapy”, of which “we hope the dose is correct.” “The longer we wait, the more difficult it becomes,” he justified the drastic cuts. Without them, hospitals could face life and death decisions due to overcrowding of intensive care units. Germany is “back to a point where we have to agree tough measures,” said Berlin Mayor Michael Müller, who sat next to Merkel and Söder.

The federal and state governments want to evaluate the measures in two weeks. They are currently in place until the end of November and are applied throughout the country. Thuringian Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow has already announced that he will submit the resolutions to the Thuringian state parliament and his cabinet for confirmation. Thuringia does not want to take a special route to contain the corona pandemic.
