All Austria is affected by the corona virus. With the upcoming traffic light change, almost every district in the country could turn red.
Currently 26 districts are glowing bright red at the Corona stoplight. It has been almost a week since the stoplight commission was last lit and tomorrow Thursday they are scheduled to meet again as a routine. But what is the current situation of the crown in Austria?
Much has changed. Although the numbers rise to a new record high every day, Vienna hasn’t been the state with the most new infections for a few days. Meanwhile, this tragic rank has been overtaken by Upper Austria from the federal capital. “The highest priority of the moment is not to overload our health system. This requires everyone’s help,” warned the Governor of Upper Austria, Thomas Stelzer, who at the same time announced that the measures would be toughened.
Districts with the most corona cases
The Hallein district in Salzburg, where the Kuchl community is under quarantine due to the rapid spread of the crown, is no longer THE hotspot of the Federal Republic. In the ranking of incidents of 7 days per 100,000 inhabitants, Hallein “only” occupies the seventh place.
The Tyrolean district of Schwaz currently tops the list with a value of 652.2 positive tests per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days. It is followed by the district of Eferding (612.3; Upper Austria) and at some distance from the districts of Dornbirn (541.3; Vorarlberg), Rohrbach (483), Grieskirchen (475.9; both Upper Austria). The latter, such as St. Johann im Pongau (Salzburg), with 472.9, have a similar incidence to the Hallein district (472.1). For comparison: Vienna currently has a value of 260.9.
Hundreds of deaths
In terms of the number of deaths of people who tested positive for coronavirus but died before recovering, Vienna sadly continues to rank dismally at the top among districts. This is also because Vienna is counted as a city and does not publish its own district data.
According to the latest data, so far 340 deaths have been recorded in Vienna. They are followed in absolute numbers by Graz (56), Hartberg-Fürstenfeld (47) and Graz-Umgebung (43), all three in Styria.
Together with 100,000 inhabitants, Hartberg-Fürstenfeld is at the top nationally with a value of 51.9. Graz-Umgebung is only in fourth place behind Landeck (40.6) and Kufstein (32.8) in Tyrol. Vienna ranks 12th on this tragic list.
Only 10 districts with no fatalities
So far, there has been at least one death related to the corona virus in almost every district in Austria. Only ten districts are an exception, most of which are in Burgenland (Eisenstadt, Rust, Güssing, Jennersdorf) and Carinthia (Villach, Hermagor, St. Veit an der Glan, Feldkirchen). Wiener Neustadt (Lower Austria) and Murau (Styria) are the only districts in their respective federal states without deaths.
Will (almost) all of Austria be red?
As “DerStandard” reported on Wednesday evening, almost every district in Austria could soon be threatened with a red switch at the next traffic light in Corona. Only seven districts of Carinthia should be exempt from the highest level of corona warning.
According to the report, the extensive red switch was discussed at a preliminary meeting for the traffic light commission meeting. It would be the first time the red light has been issued for entire federal states, and Vienna would be red too. A general red card for all of Austria is also in the room, he continues. At the same time, the federal government apparently wants to put together another package of measures, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler have announced a press conference for Thursday.
