Austrian legend announces early departure
27.10.2020|11:30 am.|by Maximilian Bohne
He is one of the most successful players in his country: Jürgen Melzer is a two-time Grand Slam champion in doubles and a former top 10 player in singles. Now, the 39-year-old man announced the moment of his resignation.
After the 2021 Australian Open ends
After the Australian Open 2021 it will be over. “I don’t want to play my last game in front of empty stands,” said Melzer, who hopes to have spectators in Melbourne. And who knows, maybe the Austrian can add a delicacy or two to his successful career by then. The Viennese celebrated the greatest successes of his career in 2010 at Wimbledon and in 2011 at the US Open, in both tournaments he triumphed in the doubles competition alongside Philipp Petzschner. Nine years later, the series of successes is not over yet: Last week, Melzer celebrated the 17th double title in densely occupied St. Petersburg.
But Melzer knew how to inspire not only as a couple, but also alone. In his youth he won the youth competition at Wimbledon and the southpaw won five singles tournaments on the ATP Tour. Two of them in a special atmosphere in the Viennese city hall. By advancing to the semi-finals of the French Open in 2010, he laid the foundation for a true milestone. The following spring, he became the second player from his country (after Thomas Muster) to enter the top 10 of the world rankings. On top of that, the crowd favorite, who has been swinging the bat in the professional circus for over 20 years, is the turntable for the Austrian Davis Cup team with 74 appearances.
“That would be a great conclusion.”
But until he gets into a well-deserved retirement, Melzer wants to give it his all again: “One of the last big goals is, of course, the ATP final in London,” says the doubles specialist. “It would be a great ending.” With teammate Edouard Roger-Vasselin, Melzer is eighth in the Race to London and is therefore in a very promising position to participate. The following is Melzer’s last appearance at the local tournament in Vienna. Here, the French / Austrian combination wants to take the next step towards the end of the season.
Melzer already has a plan for the time after his career and of course the tennis enthusiast stays true to his sport. Starting in February, Melzer will be the sporting director of the Austrian Tennis Association. Even if, of course, it is far from over: we wish you every success in your new endeavor and congratulate you on an outstanding career.
