In a television interview, Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz explained the scenario of a possible further lockdown in Austria: “The limit is the overload of intensive care medicine.”
Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (VP) spoke about the state of the nation in a television interview on Pulse 24 on Monday.
“The easiest thing would be to close and say: everything is closed, everyone stays at home, there is nothing left. But that is not our goal.”
When does a second block become realistic?
The number of infections is increasing considerably in Austria. Therefore, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz is considering a second block: the situation in the clinics is crucial.
“The limit is the overload of intensive care medicine. Thank God we have a very strong healthcare system in Austria, a lot of intensive care capacities compared to other European countries; we are better positioned than other countries. The number of infections it’s too high, but it’s still half controlled. Of course there is also the limit for us where it becomes problematic. “
When is the capacity limit exceeded?
“With 6,000 boxes a day we are approaching our capacity limits. We know that if growth continues, we will approach 6,000 boxes and capacity limits in December. If growth is even faster, then the situation is very, very dramatic. ”

The chancellor is concerned
Austria has “a massively increasing exponential growth”, Kurz also stated in ORF. “The situation is, even for those who still don’t want to believe it, very, very serious.”
In this sense, it trusts the assessment of the virologist Elisabeth Puchhammer-Stöckl, who also advises the Foreign Ministry. In an email made public Sunday, the doctor warned members of the Health Ministry’s Corona working group about the uncontrolled spread.
On the national holiday, Federal Chancellor Kurz prepared Austrians for the harsh autumn and winter months and the upcoming “efforts”: “The next few months will be an act of force for all of us.”
Kurz clearly says: “We will have to live with the virus for many more months.”
“Many can no longer”
The Chancellor is aware that the crisis demands a lot from everyone. Many are “exhausted, they don’t want to know anything more about Corona and they just can’t.”
Understand that you do not want to wear a mask and do not want to tolerate any restrictions. But as head of government he had to tell the people, “that we will have to live with the virus for many months. We will have to hold out until a vaccine allows us to return to normal.”
