Dominic Thiem has to change his plans on short notice. A circumstance that will not be bad for the Austrian, however, he had recently emphasized that he had the utmost respect for his original first-round opponent at the Erste Bank Open, by Kei Nishikori. Now it has been announced that he will not go against the Japanese after all, Nishikori had to withdraw due to an injury to his right shoulder. This is synonymous with the end of the season for the Japanese.
He is replaced by Ukraine’s Vitaliy Sachko, who narrowly missed Norbert Gombos in the second qualifying round. Sachko is ranked 529th in the world rankings and thus a much nicer start for Austria’s number one. Especially since the field of participants in the Erste Bank Open is only full of the best stars. Sachko and Thiem will play the third game tomorrow Tuesday after 2 pm
Schwartzman and de Minaur also retire
As early as Monday morning, it became known that yesterday’s ATP finalists Alex de Miñaur (final in Antwerp) and last year’s finalist Diego Schwartzman (Cologne final) had withdrawn their start at the ATP 500 event in Vienna. Jason Jung and Lorenzo Sonego entered the field as lucky losers for them.
