With 2,782 other people infected with SARS-CoV-2, a new record was set for a Sunday in Austria. Figures from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of the Interior show that there have been 80,811 positive results so far in Austria. The 3,614 new infections reported on Saturday in 24 hours had raised the number of active cases in Austria to more than 20,000 for the first time. However, no one sees the need for closure.
As of Sunday 9:30 a.m., 979 people in Austria had died from the corona virus or the corona virus and 57,858 had recovered. There are currently 21,974 actively infected people. 1,225 people are in hospital treatment for coronavirus, 174 of them in intensive care units. On Sunday, nearly 15.7 percent of the tests recorded were positive.
Most of the positive results were recorded in Vienna with 686, followed by Upper Austria with 612 and Lower Austria with 416. In Styria there were 325 infections, in Tirol 313 and in Salzburg 269. Vorarlberg remained in double digits with 68, Burgenland with 47 and Carinthia with 46 new infections.
There was no threat of lockdown, but the policy came with serious warnings: “The situation is extremely serious, the situation is getting worse,” Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) said in the “Kurier”. In other countries there are already closures with schools, shops, restaurants and curfews closed. This is also imminent in Austria if the growth of infections is not slowed. “At the moment it doesn’t appear that is the case,” Kurz said gloomily.
