After the defeat at SK Rapid, LASK is back on the winning track after a three-week break in the Bundesliga championship. In the well-deserved 4-0 victory over SKN St. Pölten, the athletes were convincing in every respect and left no chance for the overwhelmed guests.
LASK, which announced another positive Corona case the day before and had to dispense with James Holland, Marvin Potzmann and Rene Renner, among others, took over from the start. The first opportunities were not long in coming. Especially Reinhold Ranftl opened almost a private duel with St. Pölten goalkeeper Riegler. First he failed by direct acceptance by the goalkeeper (6th), then a header (9th) and another shot (13th) missed the goal, once a defender launched himself in the middle (21st). Petar Filipovic headed in (15th) and Lukas Grgic (25th) had more chances to close.
The Linz acted extremely domineering, had his opponent completely under control, and combined mostly very well. Those from Lower Austria never got dangerously close to Alex Schlager’s goal, while the athletes got caught in the middle of the guests. The lead in the 34th minute was far behind: Peter Michorl switched quickly and sent Andreas Gruber deep with his free kick, which made it 1-0.
Exactly the same image in the middle of two. LASK controlled the game at will, letting the ball roll thanks to good positional play, and continued to develop a series of first-rate opportunities. Just seconds after the restart, Ranftl was finally able to look forward to his long-awaited sense of accomplishment: his shot from close range was aimed at goal by a St. Pöltner this time: 2-0 (46th). Gruber missed a bit later on goalkeeper Riegler (55th), decisively extended Michorl’s next corner to Lukas Grgic, who finished it 3-0.
By then, at the latest, the match was decided, LASK were still on the trigger and hungry for goals, while the guests also appeared in the second leg only out of harmlessness. The only drawback of the local team, which in the end registered more than 66 percent possession and 26-2 shots on goal: efficiency. The match could well have ended with half a dozen goals. For example, Grgic missed at close range on the goalkeeper (62nd), Ranftl on pole (69th) and Goiginger again on Riegler (71st). The latter then scored his goal after a good solo on his return to the Bundesliga – it was his first in the championship since November 10, 2019 against Admira.
Due to the clear course of the game, the High Austrians were able to save some fortresses, Cheberko and Madsen also came to their missions during the game. Linz will continue in the Europa League against Rasgrad on Thursday.
