Less relevant immigration

And many see immigration to Europe as the biggest problem right now. This means that Europeans’ concerns about migration have slid 13 percentage points down the list of problems. In Austria even more: only 18 percent consider immigration to be the biggest problem in the EU.

However, where Austrians expect much more from the EU than the average EU citizen is the area of health: 36 percent of Austrians see this as the most important challenge for the EU at the moment, the EU average here is 31 percent.

The issue of climate change has lost its importance (decrease from 8 percentage points to 20 percent) and is now just ahead of unemployment (17 percent, + 5 percentage points).

45% of citizens are satisfied with the actions the EU has taken since then in response to the crisis, but almost the same number (44%) are dissatisfied.

Wanted: a vaccine

What Europeans now expect mainly from the EU: a strategy to deal with future crises and provide funding for the development of a vaccine.

Confidence in the EU has remained stable in times of the crown pandemic: despite the initial chaos in the crown crisis, almost two-thirds (62%) of Europeans are confident that the EU will make the right decisions in the future regarding the corona pandemic.

40% of respondents generally have a positive image of the EU, 40% also have a neutral image; one fifth of EU citizens have a negative image. Austrians view the EU with a little more skepticism: 34 percent are positive, 29 percent negative and the rest are neutral.

Finally, 60 percent of the European population is optimistic about the future of the EU at this difficult time. The most optimistic are Ireland (81%), Lithuania and Poland (both 75%). Optimism is lowest in Greece (44%) and Italy (49%).
