The EU health agency ECDC assesses the corona situation as a major threat to public health. Friday’s risk update said that Covid 19 infections had risen significantly in EU countries in recent weeks. The increase in reported cases is no longer just due to increased evidence. The leader in the current ECDC assessment is the Czech Republic with 1,149 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Compared to these 1,149 cases, Austria is still in the middle of the countryside in Europe with a new infection rate of 234 per 100,000 inhabitants for 14 days. The neighboring countries of Austria, Slovakia (360) and Slovenia (487), are also well ahead. The situation in Belgium is extreme, with 1,020 the second country already in the four-digit range. With 107, Germany is on a completely different level.
“What we are seeing now is clearly a second wave of infections and we expect it to get worse,” said Agoritsa Baka, an expert on crisis preparedness at ECDC. It is worrying that more older people are now getting infected again. “Many countries have reported an increase in death rates and the total number of deaths has increased for more than a month,” the report said.
Currently there are only six countries in the region with a stable epidemiological situation; According to the ECDC, these are Estonia, Cyprus, Greece, Finland, Norway and Liechtenstein.
