From Wednesday to Thursday there were 2,435 new confirmed infections with the corona virus in Austria. This is by far the highest value recorded since the outbreak of the pandemic.

So far, the largest increase in 24 hours has been 1,958 infected people. This sad record, which was set yesterday, was beaten in 477 cases today.

When comparing federal states, the newest and most confirmed cases were again registered in Vienna (659), followed by Upper Austria (471), Lower Austria (403), Tyrol (338), Styria (192), Salzburg (177), Vorarlberg (92), Carinthia (63) and Burgenland (40).

So far, 71,844 positive results have been obtained in Austria. As of today (October 22, 2020, 9:30 am), 941 people in Austria have died from the consequences of the corona virus and 53,970 have recovered. There are currently 1,002 people in hospital treatment for the corona virus, 161 of them in intensive care units.

The situation in Vienna

The 659 new cases in Vienna also signify a new record for new coronavirus infections. However, when asked by the APA, a spokesman for the city’s crisis team said that this value must be related to the high number of tests carried out yesterday Wednesday (7,187).

According to the spokesperson, the new infections are “mostly K1 people who can be assigned to existing pools.” K1 people are those who have had direct, prolonged and close contact with a person who has been shown to be infected with coronavirus. Contact persons are collected, isolated, and tested using contact tracing.

So far, a total of 24,909 verifiably confirmed coronavirus infections have been recorded in Vienna. 5,812 people currently suffer from the disease. 300 people have died as a result, five of them since Wednesday morning. The additional deaths are women between the ages of 45 and 91, all of whom had previous illnesses.

18,797 people are healthy again. 7,187 tests were conducted on Wednesday. Therefore, the total number of tests is 569,933.

Travel advisories

The growing number of cases in Austria was also reflected in new travel advisories on Thursday morning. Germany put the whole of Austria on the risk list, with the exception of Carinthia, and the Netherlands put the whole country on the list.
