For a long time, Barack Obama refrained from criticizing his successor in the White House. At the end of the electoral campaign, however, he intervened again. The former US president launched harsh attacks on incumbent Donald Trump at his first election campaign rally in support of presidential candidate Joe Biden.
In a speech in Philadelphia on Wednesday, Obama described the president as “incapable of taking the office seriously.” The head office of state “is not a reality show. It is reality,” Obama said, referring to Trump’s previous role on the television series “The Apprentice.”
Posting messages on Twitter “while sitting in front of the television does not solve the problem,” Obama said of his successor in office. The former president appealed to supporters of his Democratic Party not to believe they had a false sense of security due to the current positive poll numbers for Biden. “I don’t care about the polls,” Obama said.
No repetition of the mistakes of 2016
He referred to the numerous misleading polls about the presidential election four years ago that predicted a victory for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton over Trump. At the time, many people had become “lazy and complacent” due to these polls and did not vote. This should not be repeated.
In both national polls and individual state polls deemed decisive for the Nov. 3 election, Biden is ahead of Trump. Pollsters say they learned from their mistakes four years ago and improved their methods.
In recent months, Obama, who is highly regarded by many Democrats, already had video messages behind Biden, who had served him as vice president for eight years. The former president also participated in online campaign fundraising events. But now he appeared for the first time directly in front of the fans to support Biden.
In another meeting, Obama also made it clear
Due to the pandemic, the Obama rally was organized as a drive-in theater in which the audience had to stay in their cars. Philadelphia is in the state of Pennsylvania, which is counted among the key states in the elections. In 2016, Trump surprisingly won there against Clinton.
Before his campaign speech, Obama met with African American community leaders in Philadelphia. He accused Trump of massive failures in dealing with the crown pandemic. Many people would not have died if there had not been so much “incompetence” in government and so much “misinformation” had not spread, Obama said. He stressed that Biden and his vice-candidate Kamala Harris were able to deal “more efficiently” with the crown crisis.
With around 8.3 million cases of infection and more than 220,000 deaths, the United States is the country in the world most affected by the corona pandemic.
