Berlin – This news shocked art lovers around the world: Attack on Museum Island in Berlin! On October 3, at least 70 works of art and antiques were damaged. The perpetrators are unknown, the police and museums have remained silent.
On Tuesday evening, Deutschlandfunk (DLF) and “Die Zeit” made public what had been hidden so far: “One or more unknown perpetrators sprayed at least 70 objects in the Pergamon Museum, the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie and other places with a visible oily liquid. It left marks on Egyptian sarcophagi, stone sculptures and paintings from the 19th century. “
For the DLF “one of the most extensive attacks on works of art and antiquities in the history of post-war Germany.”
The Museum Island in the historic center of Berlin is one of the most important places in the capital. Security precautions have long been criticized: in March 2017, a gang managed to steal a 100 kilogram gold coin (value: 3.75 million euros). Now attack with an oily liquid.
It is unclear how the perpetrators could proceed despite the surveillance cameras. A police press spokeswoman confirms the BILD investigation by the art crimes department of the State Criminal Police Office. Why did they remain a secret? “There were tactical investigation reasons for not informing the public.”
LKA seeks witnesses
With a letter that the “ Tagesspiegel ”is available, the LKA is now looking for visitors who purchased a day ticket to one or more museums on Museum Island on October 3.
The researchers ask, among other things: Have you or your colleagues noticed suspicious people? If so, how? Do you think it is possible to recognize it in photos? Have you noticed any staining damage on individual displays or on the floor? If so, when?
How high is the damage to works of art and antiques, if the oil leaves permanent damage, there is no statement from state museums. Press chief Markus Farr taciturn on BILD: “There is damage to the objects.” Talking about an attack is biased. Farr didn’t want to say anything more: “We didn’t comment on it.”
What role did Attila Hildmann play in the attack?
The fanatic of the conspiracy Attila Hildmann (39) had spread several times that the Pergamon Museum houses the “Throne of Satan” and that it is the center of the “world Satanist and criminal scene of the Crown”. His confused claim: “Here they make their human sacrifices at night and desecrate the children!”
On Tuesday night he posted a link to the articles by “Zeit” and DLF.
Hildmann has always had his eye on the museums on Museum Island since June. There, on the steps of the Altes Museum, the anti-Semitic vegan cook regularly rushed to the rallies until the Berlin assembly authorities banned them. A “boycott” of the Altes Museum, so Hildmann and adds: “filthy Satanists.”
From August onward, Hildmann continued to shoot on his Telegram channel, especially at the Pergamon Museum, where the “throne of Satan” is supposed to be. It refers to the Altar of Baal, in which – according to Hildmann’s conspiracy theory – “sacrificed persons” and “raped children”. In his propaganda messages it is said over and over again that he is the “center of global Satanists and crown criminals.”
Hildmann is even said to have asked his followers to raid the Pergamon Museum in August.
Furthermore, Hildmann repeatedly connects Chancellor Angela Merkel’s private apartment with the supposed throne of Satan. He lives in the vicinity of the Museum Island. On his Telegram channel, which now has more than 100,000 subscribers, he repeatedly refers to the Chancellor as a “demon”, “Satanist” or “Illuminati”.
Since May, in Brandenburg, where Hildmann is based, investigations have been carried out against the vegan cook for sedition.
