Also in September, tourism in Vienna suffered a sharp drop due to the crown. Compared to the previous year, the number of overnight stays decreased by 75.1 percent.

Unsurprisingly, Vienna’s tourism businesses also posted a sharp drop in September due to the crown: compared to September 2019, overnight stays fell by 75.1 percent, as Vienna Tourism announced in a broadcast on Tuesday. Most of the guests came from Austria and Germany.

Hotel industry in Vienna: Very sad situation

The situation of the hotel industry in Vienna has been very sad for months. Even after the expiration of the ban on entry to accommodation establishments for tourism purposes at the end of May, urban tourism progresses extremely slowly.

In September, 376,000 overnight stays were recorded. Most of the guests came from Austria with 145,000 overnight stays (down 43 percent compared to 2019) and Germany with 101,000 overnight stays (down 67 percent), and Berlin issued a travel advisory for Vienna in mid-September.

Almost total failure for visitors from various countries

Visitors from the US (minus 96 percent), Great Britain (minus 91 percent), Spain (minus 93 percent) and Russia (minus 95 percent) were almost completely absent. These countries are among the markets that have been most active so far this year. China, actually one of Vienna’s main markets before Corona, is no longer in the statistics.

The average occupancy rate for hotel beds fell to 18.4 percent in September (2019: 63.8 percent), and that of rooms to around 24 percent (2019: about 83 percent). In September, Vienna had about 56,000 hotel rooms. That was 18 percent or about 12,000 beds less than in September 2019.

70 percent decrease in overnight net turnover

Unsurprisingly, there is also a big downside to overnight net turnover for lodging establishments. From January to August (September data is not yet available) they generated 188.6 million euros. That means a 70 percent decrease. A total of 4.17 million overnight stays were recorded in the period from January to September. That’s 67.8 percent less than in the same period last year.
