World Savings Day will be at least a World Savings Week: to avoid huge crowds in times of the corona pandemic, the traditional World Savings Day will be “lengthened” this year. Hospitality must be canceled due to Corona regulations, the usual offers and gifts are available in the institutes as usual, on several days only: October 19-30 at Wiener Neustädter Sparkasse and Hypo Niederösterreich, October 27-30 . to October 30 at Raiffeisenregionalbank and Bank Austria and from October 28 to 30 at Volksbank.

“In this way we want to ensure that there are no crowds on this day,” says Christian Spitzer, Director of Wiener Neustädter Sparkasse. Risk groups such as people over 65 or people with previous illnesses should be especially careful and avoid rush hours. There’s a little giveaway at Sparkasse this year, including organic spelled noodles from Bad Erlach. “We are giving up a big party and are not inviting any guests of honor,” says Gerhard Gabriel, director of Raiffeisenregionalbank Wiener Neustadt. In an interview with NÖN, he praised the clients’ cooperation in implementing the mask, distance rules and companionship requirement: “Clients are very disciplined, that works well”. Raika also has gifts this year for children and young people, “the money that we save because there is no great celebration, we donate it to the local firefighters,” says Gabriel.

At Hypo they also celebrate World Savings Week instead of World Savings Day: “We are delighted to be able to welcome so many customers and friends because we know that it is not easy and that one or the other is thinking of staying home”, he says the branch manager. Manfred Wicha: “As a regionally sustainable Landesbank, customers receive traditional and regional gifts from us, for example poppy seed oil, organic noodles and organic Lower Austrian popcorn.”

At Volksbank, reveals Peter Digruber, this year there are juices from the Altenriederer fruit farm in Traismauer: “They will not only be available until October 30, but while supplies last.”

At Bank Austria, there will also be gifts at branches during World Savings Week. In addition, UniCredit Bank Austria donates World Savings Day gifts to cooperation partners such as the SOS Children’s Village, as well as to local charities, kindergartens and schools. This year, for example, it’s bee books or carabiners for keys or drinking bottles.

The passbook is still popular

Regarding the forms of saving, a survey carried out by Bank Austria shows that investments in securities continue to increase. “The conviction that this is the only way to achieve returns continues to prevail,” they say. However, classic savings products are still used. This is confirmed by Klaus Lehner, Managing Director of Wiener Neustädter Sparkasse: “Savings are now even more popular with Austrians, even if interest rates are low.” The savings rate increased from 165 euros per month in 2010 to 272 euros this year. Despite the low interest rates, the savings account is the most popular form of savings at 72 percent, according to the Sparkasse survey.
