“Protect yourself and your neighbors”
The new head of government gave his compatriots a message that seemed almost resigned: “Protect yourself and your neighbors.” Because: “It is worse than on March 18, when we announced the total closure,” said Prime Minister Alexander de Croo.
The situation is now more than tense, especially in hospitals. On Tuesday, 2,774 Covid-19 patients were in Belgian clinics, 446 of them in intensive care units. An average of 267 new patients come to the clinic every day, 95 percent more than in the previous seven days. If the number of infections continues to increase, other medical treatments will need to be stopped.
Compared to the last peak in March, three times more intensive care patients need to be seen. The outlook is not bright. On the contrary: the situation “is going to get even worse,” the prime minister said. If infection rates continue to rise in this way, statisticians estimate that all intensive care beds in Belgium will surely be occupied from mid-November.
