Bregenz Mayor-designate Michael Ritsch (SPÖ) sees himself as “not yet fit for work” after his coronavirus illness. His biggest problem is fatigue, he told the “Vorarlberger Nachrichten”.

It is open if he will recover in the constituent meeting of the city council on Friday, in which he will be appointed mayor: “For that reason, I cannot say if the constituent meeting (…) will already take place this Friday.”

Surprising win against Linhart

On September 27, Ritsch surprisingly prevailed in a second round against Mayor Markus Linhart (ÖVP, since 1998). According to his own assessment, he was infected with the virus in the session of the state parliament on October 7.

“It is no coincidence that my colleagues Elke Zimmermann and Manuela Auer, as well as Andrea Kerbleder from the FPÖ, who were sitting nearby, also got infected and became ill,” Ritsch said in the interview with VN. On Thursday night (October 8) he woke up with chills, dizziness, and severe headaches and body aches. There were no symptoms attributed to the disease “that I did not contract,” said the SPÖ politician. The worst thing he encountered was shortness of breath.

“Completely exhausted”

The fever is gone and the senses of smell and taste have returned. What is still lacking is strength. “If I answer a few emails, I’m completely exhausted again,” Ritsch said. Sleeps a lot “As I am now, I am still far from doing my job,” he said.
