Crown measurements: no drill at all

Dramatically, tension built: that first ZIB 2Interview with the Minister of Health, then the Facebook video of the Chancellor’s office – orchestrated by Angela Merkel’s video podcast for those interested internationally (“Please stay home whenever possible”). So another hammer action was to be expected for the Quartetto Coronale’s press appearance announced for this morning.

It’s just a hammer. “Mom, he didn’t do a drill,” the joyful exclamation of the children comes to mind after the first visit to the dentist.

So as not to be misinterpreted: This is not a criticism of too lax measures, and it is certainly not a hint of masochism (“We need more …”). On the contrary: you cannot avoid living with the virus in the long term, if you observe certain precautionary measures. But it is an expression of some amazement at the government’s communication strategy: first the dramatic appeal, then the comparatively soft measures.

Also, if it is true that most infections occur in the private sector, but politics fortunately has little access to them, then there is little control here. The appeal to liability remains. What Kurz correctly emphasizes over and over again: it depends on the individual.

However, in the long run, the whole game of sugar, bread and whip, or rather the other way around, will wear out. For people to “stay home whenever possible” is honestly not a reasonable prospect.

However, basic virtues like decency and considerateness are very reasonable: in the face of the pandemic, they need it even more than usual.
