S-Bahn Main Line Expansion: New ÖBB Package Brings One Billion More Investments to Vienna

[ad_1]

In the ÖBB framework plan approved by the Ministry of Infrastructure, investments totaling 17,500 million euros are foreseen for the next five years. The goal is to make public routes more attractive, especially for commuters coming to work.

VIENNA. The plans are big and expensive: between 2021 and 2016, € 17.5 billion will be invested in rail infrastructure across Austria, of which € 1.62 billion in Vienna. That’s almost a billion in additional expenses, because the existing plans have been expanded once again through these investments. The most important innovation is the improvement of the main line of S-Bahn.

The ÖBB’s modified framework plan in Vienna aims to help ensure that the vast majority, i.e. 85% of trips in Vienna, will be covered on foot, by bicycle or by public transport by 2030 (currently 73% as of 2019). as you want the smart city strategy.

One train every 2.5 minutes

The S-Bahn route between Meidling and Floridsdorf is expected to carry even more passengers in a shorter time by 2026. Station platforms will be expanded from the previous 160 to 220 meters, allowing longer trains to run with more passengers. A more modern train control system consists of increasing the capacity of the line; Instead of the current 700, 900 trains will be in motion every day. This also shortens the intervals up to 2.5 minutes. The travel time between Meidling and Floridsdorf will be shortened by another two minutes. This conversion is the most expensive project in Vienna and is estimated at around 630 million euros. Construction works are not scheduled to begin until 2022.

Another new plan is to extend the Meidling – Mödling line to four lanes. Work is scheduled to start here in 2025. The section from Meidling to Liesing should be completed in 2032. The one from Liesing to Mödling in 2034. With this investment, even more travelers should be able to do without the car.

There are also conversions at some train stations: in Floridsdorf, parking spaces are being expanded and the Hütteldorf train station is being converted. All of this was decided in addition to the already established plans, such as the construction of the connecting line and the renovations at the Penzing and Westbahnhof stations. More details on the master plan are available on the website of the Ministry of Infrastructure.
