Like many European countries, Austria has new record levels of corona infections. The federal and state governments have now agreed to new rules designed to prevent the pandemic from spreading.
Austria is tightening measures to contain the corona virus. This included maximum limits of six people for private gatherings in buildings and twelve people outdoors, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) said in Vienna on Monday. Yoga and dance courses, birthday parties, weddings and club gatherings are also affected.
Additionally, mouth and nose protection should be worn at all times at cultural and sporting events such as Bundesliga games and operas. For officially approved events, the visitor limit is 1,000 indoors and 1,500 outdoors, Kurz said.
Kurz addresses the population in clear terms
The head of government called on Austrians to adhere to the measures that have been in place since Friday. “The next few months will be a red-white-red show of force,” Kurz said. It is important to avoid a second blockage.
In Austria, the number of new infections is increasing, as is practically everywhere in Europe. If the trend is not stopped, 6,000 new cases a day will be feared in December, Kurz said. In relation to the number of inhabitants, this would correspond to a value of around 55,000 in Germany.
