The 23-year-old from Maishofen fell about 2,700 meters above sea level below the main Schmiedingerkees summit on Sunday into a crevasse roughly 100 meters wide. His colleagues alerted the emergency services. Since the early hours of the morning, Kaprun mountain rescuers have been searching for the freerider on the Kitzsteinhorn after the search had to be interrupted on Sunday night.
Challenge for mountain rescuers
Using special crevasse rescue equipment and steam probes, they descended a good 40 meters and dug a good five meters for the young man who was buried in the snow. The rift is highly branched and the search was dangerous for everyone involved due to falling snow and was therefore canceled for the night.
Corpse discovered in a crevice
On Monday morning, a tethered mountain rescuer finally saw more clues about the young man in the crevasse at a depth of about 20 meters. A vapor probe could be used to reach the victim. He was rescued from the crevasse by rescuers on the mountain and eventually the police helicopter team took him into the valley.
Some 20 mountain lifeguards, two from St. Johann in Tirol, three Alpine policemen, the Libelle Salzburg helicopter team and the mountain rail track service were on duty.
