Ankara threatens time and again to allow thousands of immigrants to come from Turkey to Greece and therefore also to the EU.
Greece is expanding its border fences along the Evros (Turkish: Meric) river on the border with Turkey. The construction was necessary “for Greek citizens to feel safe,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on state television (ERT) after an inspection of the project’s progress. Ankara threatens time and again to allow thousands of immigrants to come from Turkey to Greece and therefore also to the EU.
In the north of the border river at the Kastanies / Kapikule junction there is already a fence about eleven kilometers long. Athens is currently building three new fences in three sections of the southern course of the river over a length of about 27 kilometers. They are being built near the town of Ferres, where there are numerous shallow spots, and should be ready by April 2021, Mitsotakis announced.
A crisis between the EU and Turkey broke out on the river in February. Ankara had stated at the time that the border with the European Union was open. Later, thousands of migrants settled in Turkey. The EU responded that Turkey was taking advantage of the plight of migrants and sent additional officials from the European border protection agency Frontex. Greek security forces prevented most of the conversions at the time. The president of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, thanked the Greeks for being the “European shield”.
