The Arbesbach bear forest (Zwettl district) had to say goodbye to its first inhabitant. “Vinzenz” was put to sleep on Friday at the age of 32, the animal protection organization Vier Pfoten announced on Sunday. Vinzenz has gotten much older than bears typically have in the wild, said Sigrid Zederbauer, operations manager for the bear forest. Despite its age, the light-furred bear was in excellent health until recently.

Recently, however, her physical condition has deteriorated rapidly, which is why it was decided with great regret to end her suffering. “With his always balanced and friendly manner, he was kind of a haven of peace. Many visitors to Bear Forest were declared Vinzenz fans,” recalled Zederbauer.

“Vinzenz”, born in Slovenia in 1988, fell into the hands of circus trainers who, however, disappeared a short time later and left him in Styria. Together with his sister “Liese”, who died in 2017, he ended up in a private company and later made a living as a tourist attraction in a 300 square meter concrete shaft in Gemeindealpe, near Mitterbach.

After the company went bankrupt, Vier Pfoten stepped in and took care of both animals. In September 1998 the company moved to the then new bear protection center in Waldviertel.
