An explosion on Sunday night likely destroyed much of the alternative school in Dornbirn. The cause of the detonation was initially unclear, but a gas explosion is considered likely.

At the time of the accident, there were no people in the building, but it is likely that three people from the neighborhood were slightly injured by flying parts.

Mayor on site

The detonation, which had occurred shortly after midnight, could be heard and felt from afar. Broken glass and pieces of metal have flown over 100 meters. Train traffic on the rail line immediately next to the alternative school had to be temporarily interrupted.

Red Cross in action

“As a result of the explosion, there was a large fire that covered the entire building,” said fire brigade commander Gerold Hämmerle. The surrounding buildings also suffered partial damage.

Interview with residents

The building was the alternative school in Fischbach, which currently houses three classes of the Forach Primary School, which has yet to be built. The alternative school was built about ten years ago and has since served as alternative accommodation for schools that are recently being renovated or built.

Police investigations are ongoing

After the blast at the alternative school in Dornbirn, polls were still ongoing on Sunday morning. Fire investigators were at the scene, but there are currently no new findings, an APA police spokesman said. I wasn’t expecting any new information until later in the morning at the earliest.

Three people are believed to have been slightly injured in the detonation. However, there is still no reliable information on this, he said. It was also unclear who they were, for example firefighters or neighbors.
