LH Schützenhöfer urges the government to tighten the crown’s measures across the country. He wants to go “very far”, especially when it comes to masks.
Although Styria is still doing relatively well compared to other federal states at an average of seven days, the number of new infections has risen sharply in the past two to three days. This development “sets off the alarm bells,” Governor Hermann Schützenhöfer (ÖVP) said on the sidelines of a meeting of the Corona Commission of Experts in Graz.
As the APA reports, Schützenhöfer is now lobbying the turquoise green federal government and announced his own measures: “If the federal government does not take any action on Monday, we will take some.” At the same time, however, a uniform solution should be found for the whole of Austria, especially as regards the requirement for masks, the curfew for restaurants and schools. Because: “People no longer know how to get around,” said the Styrian regional chief.

If the federal government reacts with a further tightening of the crown’s measures on Monday, Schützenhöfer still does not want to sit idly by. “Then we will talk about what additional measures or restrictions we have to implement,” the ÖVP big said, according to APA. Styrian hospitals have not yet reached their limits, “but it is a tense situation.”
Mask requirement extension
But what can the Austrians and especially those from Styria have for themselves? Schützenhofer suggests that when it comes to the subject of masks, “they will go a long way.” Due to the increase in infections in smaller clubs and the private sector, it will be necessary to discuss where it is mandatory to wear the mask. Because in the governor’s opinion, this is the best protection.
Protection of the mouth and nose is also a prerequisite for larger events with more participants to take place again. The Styrian creed: distance, one-way rules, mask and no alcohol. At the same time, Schützenhöfer speaks out against compulsory masking outdoors:
“We don’t need to be more papal than the Pope, but we have to make an effort.”
Despite all the urgency, he did not want to get ahead of the federal government and its (telephone) conference with the governors on Monday. “We have to make sure we stay away from the uneven carpet and chaos,” continued Schützenhöfer.

At the same time, the 68-year-old said that it had become more difficult for the federal government to put all countries on the same line. But even within the turquoise-green coalition, the unit is apparently crumbling. It has also become more difficult internally to create friendly and express regulations.
