A larger group of refugees was picked up on Thursday in the market town of Herrnbaumgarten. It is currently unclear how the Afghan citizens got to Austria.
In the Weinviertel market town of Herrnbaumgarten (Mistelbach district), 24 Afghan nationals were arrested on Thursday night. According to the police, the refugees applied for asylum on Friday. How they got to Austria is the subject of an investigation, Chief Inspector Johann Baumschlager told the APA.
Unlike recent cases in Bruck ad Leitha district, no smugglers were arrested, the police spokesman said. Among other things, the means of transport used by the refugees are recorded.
Other major refugee arrests in Lower Austria
The adoption in Herrnbaumgarten was the third highest in Lower Austria in the last six weeks. In Bruck ad Leitha, 38 refugees (Syrian, Iraqi and Turkish citizens) were discovered on 9 September. Sixteen days later there were ten Syrians in Haslau-Maria Ellend (Bruck ad Leitha district). Turkish citizens who had driven trucks were arrested as suspected smugglers.
Baumschlager noted Friday that the largest seizures in the border area are not uncommon. The police have maintained strong control pressure for years, including across state lines. The chief inspector emphasized that international cooperation is a key factor in the dissolution of smuggling organizations.
