September inflation 1.5 percent
The inflation rate rose slightly to 1.5 percent in September. The main price drivers continued to be housing, water and energy, followed by restaurants. Without price increases in these areas, the inflation rate in September would have been just 0.6 percent, Austria Statistics Director General Tobias Thomas said on Friday. Measures to contain the corona pandemic, on the other hand, only influenced inflation “to a very small extent.”

Quarantine free entry from New Zealand to Australia
New Zealanders from the Corona-free parts of the country can again travel without quarantine to neighboring Australia. An Auckland plane with 200 passengers on board landed in Sydney on Friday. It is the first time since the end of March that international guests do not have to be in corona isolation for 14 days. The prerequisite is that visitors have not been to a Covid 19 hotspot in their home country in the previous two weeks.
Two more flights should land later in the day. In Australia, New Zealanders can now visit the Australian states of New South Wales with the metropolis of Sydney and the seaside resort of Byron Bay and the Northern Territory with Mount Uluru (Ayers Rock). Other regions are still blocked.

“The week after closing, early May, was the best in Austria”
Good news at least for Ikea Austria.
Swedish furniture chain Ikea managed to increase sales in Austria in the last financial year despite the closing of the crown, but sales declined worldwide. Gross sales in Austria grew in fiscal 2019/20 (end of August) by 5.5 percent to € 847.3 million, of which € 124 million was attributable to the online business.
Ikea had to keep its eight locations in Austria closed from mid-March to early May due to the crown lockdown. However, once the ban ended, a large number of customers made pilgrimages to the branches. “The week after the shutdown, in early May, was the best in Austria,” Ikea Austria manager Alpaslan Deliloglu said in a broadcast. The loss of sales was more than offset during the crown-related shutdown in the period from early May to late August.

New record for new infections in Germany
According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), German health authorities reported 7,334 new corona infections in one day on Friday morning. The previous day, with 6,638 new cases, the highest value since the start of the pandemic had been registered in Germany. Last week, the RKI reported 4,516 new infections on Friday.
The current values are only partially comparable to those of the spring, because many more tests are now being carried out and therefore more infections are being discovered.
There is a clear increase in Covid 19 patients treated in intensive care in Germany. According to the RKI situation report, 655 corona-infected people were cared for in intensive care on Thursday, 329 of whom were ventilated. A week before (October 8) the value was 487 (239 ventilated), in the previous week (October 1) it was 362 (193 ventilated).

In the second quarter, the world’s second-largest economy grew just 3.2 percent.
