5,000 people at a demonstration against the closure of the site at Steyrer Stadtplatz
Steyr (OTS) – “They are serious, they want us to eat our fur. And we will resist, ”says PRO-GE president Rainer Wimmer militantly. Around 5,000 people protested on October 15, 2020 at Steyrer Stadtplatz against the closure of MAN’s profitable location. Around 2,400 employees are directly affected, in addition to thousands of supplier employees in the region. “We will fight for every job, we will not allow 6,000 families to be deprived of their livelihood,” Wimmer said.
“They lied to us!”
There was great outrage and anger against the management and owners, after all, Steyr’s site security agreement is not yet one year old. “What is done here is a slap to the workforce. It’s unpleasant to deal with people like that, ”says ÖGB State President Johann Kalliauer. “Are they supposed to be men of honor? They lied to us! ”, Says the president of the workers council, Erich Schwarz. You are ashamed of these managers who think they can play with your livelihoods.
Owners have to take responsibility
The works council, the union and the workforce are calling on the management and also the families that own the VW group to finally take responsibility for these thousands of people. “Our grandparents and our parents already worked here. Now we work here and we want our children to still be able to work here, ”says works council of employees Thomas Kutsam fiercely.
“I don’t need marketing jokes!”
Politicians also had to accept criticism from the works council and the union: “Where is the Federal Chancellor, where is the Minister? To date it has not been withdrawn
Works council. This is not how employees’ voices are handled, that is outrageous, ”explains Barbara Teiber, GPA-djp president.
Kalliauer assures representatives of the workforce that he will support the entire union movement. “The aim must be that MAN trucks continue to be manufactured here. Works councils lead the negotiations and the union and politics must support them. What we don’t need is to go it alone and make marketing jokes, the situation is too dire for that. ”
Pamela Rendi-Wagner, president of the SPÖ, guaranteed her solidarity and support. State Economic Councilor Markus Achleitner (ÖVP) also met in the town square of Steyr.
