ÖFB team boss Franco Foda relieved after victory in Romania

Three games, three wins – the Austrian soccer team’s October record is impressive. The ÖFB team closed a perfect month with a 1-0 away win in Romania (match report >>>).

The fact that the ÖFB team achieved this perfect month could not have been foreseen throughout the season in the away game in Ploiesti. Especially in the first half, the team of team boss Franco Foda failed to develop a real playing advantage over the Romanians.

“I have emphasized it time and time again, the group is very even, that is seen in the result of Norway. The Romanians are very strong, we knew that,” Foda said after the match to the ORF.

Is fatigue the fault of the first half?

Especially in the final phase of the first half, the Romanians were much closer to the lead than the ÖFB team. “We made mistakes that were too simple in the structure of the game and we didn’t have access to the pressure like in the last games,” says Foda.

“But that’s also due to the fact that we played the third game in a few days. So we feel a bit tired,” said the team boss, seeing a loss of strength compared to previous games.

Changes bring success

The halftime changes, however, had the desired effect. Stefan Ilsanker was ordered to enter the defensive triple chain. Xaver Schlager fell back in central midfield and Alessandro Schöpf formed the front row with Christoph Baumgartner and Michael Gregoritsch.

“Then we switched to a three-man chain at halftime. That worked much better. We hit the crossbar twice, in some cases very good phases of the game, where we played well until the end,” said the team chief.

Franco Foda still feared victory a bit until the end. “But you also have to be honest, we were also lucky because the Romanians didn’t play their counterattacks well.”

The referee’s performance causes displeasure

Foda was not entirely satisfied on Wednesday with the performance of the referees, who forced him to replace defensive coach Martin Hinteregger, among other things.

“Usually I don’t comment on the referees. In principle, he didn’t really take action. There were some difficult cases with brutal fouls from the opponents. I also had to take Hinteregger out because he almost turned red.
