Criticism of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz

A Neos investigation into the Ischgl case drew severe criticism of the Chancellor from the opposition. This has caused panic and chaos, hence the prosecution.

The opposition focused on Wednesday on Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) in the debate on Neos’ urgent investigation into the Ischgl affair. This spread panic, chaos and uncertainty, declared almost word for word Douglas Hoyos (Neos), Pamela Rendi-Wagner (SPÖ) and Gerhard Kaniak (FPÖ).

Rendi-Wagner criticized the fact that international warnings were not taken seriously, both in the state of Tirol and in the federal government, and were even downplayed. But doubt and waiting would create virus snowballs, which is why a corona avalanche developed in Ischgl, which the SPÖ chief saw as “a multi-organ failure” in crisis management.

The entire opposition became specifically involved in the criticism of the Ischgl commission that the announcement of a quarantine for Paznaun and Ischgl by the federal government had not been coordinated accordingly with the local authorities. In short, it caused panic and chaos, Rendi-Wagner said. Ident argued the mandate of FP Kaniak, who criticized that the affected regions had not had time to prepare. This is typical of the actions of the government, which he called: “Put an end to its ineffable advertising policy.” What the coalition is doing with its “incredible misconduct” is a source of uncertainty for both the public and the authorities.

This assessment was shared by the Neos Hoyos deputy, who specifically accused Kurz of sowing panic at press conferences. However, the head of government is not responsible if something does not work, Hoyos said.

The ÖVP Deputy Secretary-General, Gaby Schwarz, was surprised by the criticism: “This federal government has assumed responsibility from the very beginning.” One always appeared as a team, which brought calm in a challenging situation. The opposition asked them to face the pandemic together. Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) apologized: “It certainly didn’t go well on this issue.” And: “Yes, errors have occurred.” The Health Minister explained that many points of criticism in the expert report are understandable. But at the time it was an extraordinary situation.
