In the crown crisis, the state of Lower Austria is no longer dependent on Covid hospitals, as it was in spring, but on corresponding stations in ten clinics today.

LHStv. Stephan Pernkopf (ÖVP) also considered it important on Wednesday to always be one step ahead with capabilities. The fall peak in the state is expected in late November, the State Health Agency (LGA) referred to simulation researcher Niki Popper.

Currently 111 patients with crown in Lower Austria in hospitals

There are currently 111 Covid patients in Lower Austria in hospital treatment, 20 of them in intensive care units, Pernkopf explained. The highs, on April 6, were 217 and 57 respectively. The state vice president emphasized that the country’s cutting-edge medicine had worked from the beginning, which it will continue to do so. Operations that were postponed at that time have fully recovered.

“Learned” from the first phase, explained Markus Klamminger, LGA medical director. There are ten to 15 beds available in each of the ten clinics with Covid stations. In addition, normal operations will be maintained. The same path is being taken in the care and support centers (PBZ). Sick residents who do not have to go to hospital would be isolated, but would remain in their respective homes.

Peak of hospital patients expected at the end of November

Popper’s forecasts are updated every two weeks, Klamminger said. While maintaining hygiene measures, the simulation researcher expects 150 Covid patients hospitalized in Lower Austria by the end of November, of which 25 to 30 in intensive care units. The director of the LGA has “great hopes” for a vaccine “in the first half of 2021”, initially for vulnerable population groups and clinic staff.

On Wednesday 110 of the 22,000 LGA employees in state hospitals were “unable to work” due to Covid-19. 32 of them were positive. It applies to all houses where no employee has been infected by patients.

Successful treatments for patients with remdesivir

Regarding treatment options, Primarius Harald Stingl, Internal Medicine at Melk State Clinic, explained that the antiviral drug Remdesivir is used quite successfully and therefore plays an important role. He also pointed out that, based on lessons learned, significantly more patients could be kept away from intensive care units on the one hand or left on home therapy on the other.

Last but not least, Stingl made it clear that some of those recovered from Covid are also not healthy. In either case, permanent damage is possible. Covid-healthy, that is, it is no longer infectious, it can also be in the intensive care unit, added intensive care physician Christoph Hörmann from St. Pölten University Hospital.
