On Wednesday night, all postal votes were counted for the 2020 Vienna elections. A lot has happened with the outcome of the Vienna city council elections. The final result includes voting cards in detail.

Before the postal votes were counted, the Vienna card was still red at all times, because the SPÖ was in the lead everywhere at the community level. After the postal vote has been counted in the 2020 Vienna elections, Vienna city center and Hietzing are turquoise in color, as the ÖVP was able to achieve first place there. The picture therefore differs significantly from 2015. At that time, only the FPÖ was able to beat the SPÖ in two districts in the municipal council elections, namely in Simmering and the city of the Danube.

Bottom line: the FPÖ’s heavy losses allowed the SPÖ to gain traction in the 2020 Vienna elections

However, given the FPÖ’s huge losses, the Blue Districts are history. In fact, the SPÖ has regained strength in large urban areas. The “best” red light district is no longer Brigittenau, as in 2015, but with 48.4% of favorites. On the other hand, the Social Democrats in the inner districts even suffered losses in some cases; this was higher in the city with 4.2 percentage points (with 29.3 percent of the votes).

Vienna elections 2020: ÖVP in Vienna city center and stronger Hietzing

This is exactly where the ÖVP succeeded. The 34 percent achieved in the city center means an increase of 14 percentage points. The Greens are also strong at the community level in their new stronghold. There it was possible to increase by 3 percentage points to 29.8 percent. However, unlike the district council elections in the 7th district, you cannot reserve first place, but second place behind the SPÖ.

Strongest FPÖ result in Simmering with 14.9 percent

The FPÖ is still stronger in Simmering, but that should be a little consolation. It fell there by 28 percentage points to 14.9 percent. NEOS achieved its best result in the city center with 11.9 percent (plus 0.66 percentage points).

The ÖVP tops the list of increments. In Liesing, the turquoise city party can expect a 14.6 percentage point lead and a 24.22 percent vote share. The Freedom Party failed to make a profit anywhere and in view of the disastrous overall results for Vienna, unsurprisingly even when comparing districts, it has to bear the biggest loss of all parties. In Floridsdorf, the city council election was reduced by 30.9 percentage points. The percentage of votes there is only 9.71 percent.
