Whether it’s joy or frustration at the FPÖ situation, it probably won’t last long. The central themes remain, as does the party. The only question is: in what form?
Since the National Council elections in 2019, something extremely unusual has been happening at the FPÖ on election night: self-criticism. Last year, at the electoral party in Prateralm, the officials told the camera personally: “It is our fault.” Now, after the Vienna elections, club boss Herbert Kickl writes on Facebook: “No other party has beaten us this time. The FPÖ himself did this business for our opponents.” And it must be added (these words are also quite unusual at the moment): Kickl is right.
It would have been so easy for the Freedom Party to slip comfortably into the role of victim and look at others as guilty. With former party leader Heinz-Christian Strache, for example, who received at least a few percentage points. With the pandemic playing in the hands of the ruling SPÖ. Or the turquoise, which in the electoral campaign were more reminiscent of the blue ones than the old black ones.
