The SPÖ managed to reinforce its power, some duels did not materialize. The Greens take Josefstadt back from the ÖVP after ten years.
Not all district leaders were firm in the chair before the elections. Two really have to leave their place, others have strengthened their power.
The challenged
Before the election cards were counted, the situation was only exciting in one district: Der Josefstadt. Here ÖVP district leader Veronika Mickel-Göttfert and the Greens under the leadership of Martin Fabisch clashed in a melee race that truly deserves the name: the ÖVP was ahead by just 37 votes on Sunday for the night. After counting the postal votes on Monday night, the Greens were clearly ahead of the ÖVP (30.55 percent) at 33.59 percent. Mickel has to leave the district director position after ten years.
The new
In the Leopoldstadt the SPÖ took revenge. Because in the 2015 Vienna elections, the SPÖ remained the undisputed leader of the district. However, problems with the voting cards caused the election to be repeated. The SPÖ had massive problems with mobilization, the Greens were suddenly in the lead: the red stronghold was lost for the first time since the Second World War. Now it is back in the hands of the SPÖ with Alexander Nikolai.
The red recapture of Simmer, the workers’ stronghold with symbolic significance for the SPÖ, has also succeeded. Thomas Steinhart triumphs with 42.2%. Simmering was always hotly contested between the SPÖ and the FPÖ, in 2015 the district simply went to the FPÖ. The first free district president, Paul Stadler, has to pack his bags after a legislative term, even though he now achieved the best FPÖ result with 27.3%.
The strenghts
The head of the turquoise district of the Inner cityMarkus Figl, who barely missed an electoral debacle in 2015, was able to win with 39.1% against the then strong Reds, who lost 1.2 percentage points. Probably due to the excitement of the “car-free” city center. The fact that Figl eventually withdrew from the discussion should have benefited him, as should the internal tensions in the SPÖ around former district chief Mireille Ngosso.
too New building it remains what it has been since 2001: the green fortress. Markus Reiter scored 41.2% when he first appeared (he replaced long-term district chief Thomas Blimlinger in 2017), nearly double the SPÖ (21.9%).
In the “problem area” Favorites With a high proportion of workers and migrants, at least the SPÖ has no problem. With 48.3% he achieved his best result in the district elections. The district chief, Marcus Franz, with only three years in office, was able to prevail in the most populous district of Vienna with a somewhat idiosyncratic election campaign, which included a huge graffiti self-portrait.
In Hietzing everything remains the same and the elegant district remains stable in turquoise color. The ÖVP even achieved its best district result with 41.2%. Compared to the growth in Vienna, the district manager Silke Kobald was only able to increase by 1.9%.
the Brigittenau it has always been a red bulwark, even if the distance to the FPÖ has visibly melted in the last elections. Neither the Blauen nor any other party were dangerous this time, District President Hannes Derfler. With a forecast of 47.2%, the SPÖ almost scratched the absolute majority. ÖVP and the Greens are far behind in second and third place.
defenders
In some districts, the long-awaited duel for first place did not materialize. So also in Mariahilfwhere a red and green neck and neck race was expected. SPÖ district president Markus Rumelhart was finally able to keep Mariahilf at 37.6%, compared to the Greens at 28.2%.
Also in Alsergrund if a red-green duel was expected, the parties were only slightly separated in 2015. SPÖ district leader Saya Ahmed, a native of Iraq and in office since 2018, even slightly increased the SPÖ’s lead by 32.5 %.
The head of the green district Silvia Nossek had the black era in 2015 Währing finished – with minimal lead. This year, the turquoise ÖVP mobilized all forces to reconquer. To no avail: Nossek sits with 35.2% and a gap of 7.2 percentage points in the ÖVP even closer to the district emperor’s throne. As a side detail: At Währing, the SPÖ has its worst result with 19.4%.
