The people of St. Pölten will go to the polls at the end of January. Mayor Matthias Stadler convened the city senate today for Monday, October 19. It will set the date of the elections for January 24. The mayor awaits a short electoral campaign. The first waves of posters and the city hall marathon in late September had already made it clear that “some are already in election campaign mode,” Stadler said.

As in the elections to the municipal councils of Lower Austria, a quick vote ensured that in these difficult times the common force could immediately return to the work of the population. “The Corona crisis is serious and it shakes us at all levels, also economically and socially. But we must not allow the pandemic to undermine democracy, “Stadler said. A clear plan has already been drawn up on how these elections can be held as safely as possible.

Deputy Mayor Matthias Adl (ÖVP) sees himself and his party prepared despite the surprisingly early election date: “The SPÖ has shortened the deadline by three months for the third time. We will have a short and sharp election campaign in January in accordance with all the Covid-19 rules ”. On Thursday, the city party executive will choose Adl as the main candidate of the ÖVP.

St. Pölten Greens party spokeswoman Christina Engel-Unterberger wants to use the time until January 24 to deepen discussions with the people. Issues such as the climate crisis, mobility and living democracy are urgent. “We are ready for this election date,” Engel-Unterberger said. On October 17 there will be a meeting in Green St. Pölten, in which the top candidate will be chosen. Party spokeswoman Christina Engel-Unterberger is considered the favorite for the top spot on the list.

Klaus Otzelberger, FPÖ President: “The electoral campaign of Stadler’s SPÖ with this early election date only hurts the people. In the current crisis in particular, we need more solidarity and we should only work for our residents of St. Pölten. ”

The SPÖ defends a clear majority. The mayoral party reached 59% in the April 2016 municipal council election. The ÖVP got 20.3%, the FPÖ 14.7% and the Greens 2.7%. NEOS did not reach the municipal council with 1.6%, as did BLÜH and Jetzt.
