Strache could become a district councilor – Wiener Zeitung Online

It is almost certain that the former head of the FPÖ and Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache will not move to the Vienna City Hall. According to the latest projections, he and his new party, Team HC Strache, failed at the five percent hurdle. However, you could become a district councilor if you wish. Because the party will probably be represented in some district parliaments.

There are no mandates assigned yet, as the mail ballot count has not yet been completed. The distribution of terms of office is only then calculated, taking into account factors such as the number of eligible voters and voter turnout. In any case, there is no barrier to entry for districts as well as at the community level.

Decision not yet taken

Therefore, it is not yet possible to predict exactly in which district councils the HC party will sit. However, according to the city council, the match will be made in any case in the districts in which it was possible to reach around five percent. According to the ORF-SORA extrapolation, this is the case in Favoriten, the city of the Danube or in Floridsdorf. Strache will then have a choice: he ran for candidates in all 23 districts.

A decision has not yet been made in the party. “We haven’t discussed anything yet,” the team’s general secretary Christian Höbart said on Monday in response to a request from the APA. It is not yet known where there will be how many mandates. Only when this is known will appropriate decisions be made. Höbart noted that it was not yet clear in which district representatives only individual district councils would be available and where the club would be strong.

16 out of 23 districts are possible

As announced Monday afternoon, Strache’s team is expected to receive one to three terms (29 total) from 16 of the 23 district representatives. If the top candidate, Heinz-Christian Strache, really wanted to become a district councilor, he could do so in one of these 16 districts, including his home district, Landstrasse. On the other hand, no district-level mandate should result in districts 4-9 and 18.

Other small lists that have tried it all over Vienna and were unsuccessful at the municipal council and state parliament level will also pass to the district representatives. The KPÖ LINKS alliance, for example, also fought for one or two terms apiece (18 in total) in 16 districts, unlike Strache, especially in the downtown area. According to the forecast, BIER has one mandate each in twelve districts, and the SÖZ party around former Pilz MP Martha Bißmann can send seven members to six district parliaments. (apa)
