For Heinz-Christian Strache, the Vienna elections ended in debacle. Despite the desire for the two-digit number, he clearly missed the five percent hurdle.
Bitter reality: After long tremors even on election night, it is now clear: the main candidate of the HC Strache team, Heinz-Christian Strache, fails the five percent hurdle that would be necessary to enter the Vienna City Hall. Until the end, he and his “musketeers,” as Strache called them, hoped for a political miracle. However, at 3.6 percent, the team ultimately failed. Strache managed to convince at least one group of voters: the workers. In Vienna, 37 percent of them voted for the SPÖ and 26 percent for the FPÖ; behind them, Strache posted an actual record result with 19 percent in third place. Bitter, however: The election result and the number of votes were ultimately so low that only a few more reliable conclusions can be drawn from the ORF / SORA / ISA Election Day poll of 2,074 eligible voters.
What else can be said: Strache was able to convince many more men (6 percent) than women (2 percent). Regarding electoral behavior according to age, the distribution is balanced: 4 percent up to 29 years, 5 percent from 30 to 44 years, 3 percent from 45 to 59 years and 3 percent from 60 years . Strache’s strongest constituency in terms of age and gender combined were men up to 29 years old (7 percent), and the weakest among women 60 and over.
In addition to the record 19 percent result for workers, Strache was not really strong in the other employment groups. Employees voted for it three percent, as did retirees. The self-employed show a two percent Strache vote; in the group of public employees, the number is too small to be recorded. With higher formal education, the level of acceptance is constantly decreasing: seven percent for compulsory school, six percent for apprenticeships, three percent for BMS, two percent for Matura, and one percent for university.
And when it comes to education, too, men increasingly voted for Strache: nine percent of men without a Matura versus three percent of women without a Matura and two percent of men with a Matura. versus one percent of women with a Matura. Among those who say that Vienna is a very livable city, Strache only managed one percent; among those who describe Vienna as run-down, twelve percent.
It is also likely that the issue of dissatisfaction is that Strache leaked a relatively large number of votes. Eight percent of voters who were dissatisfied with the city government’s crown policy voted for Strache, only one percent who were satisfied with the crown policy. Strache also voted for eleven percent of those who are low-income on their income, while only two percent of those who work well on their income. And: those who made early decisions voted two percent, those who made late decisions eight percent for the HC Strache team.
