In the final downhill race of the World Mountain Bike Championships at Leogang, David Trummer sensationally won silver in a true mud battle.
The Styrian had to admit defeat to Britain’s Reece Wilson by 3,197 seconds on the track, which was completely softened by rain and snow at the top. The 26-year-old won the first ÖRV World Championship medal in history in the elite class.
The title was won by outsider Camille Balanche from Switzerland, who was the only one who did not fall. Marlena Neissl was ranked 16th out of just 20 participants in the absence of gold candidate Valentina Höll, who had dropped out after a crash in final training.
After Höll’s failure, Trummer, who had already achieved several top-ten finishes at the World Cup last year, unexpectedly jumped into the gap. The surprising medal was due not only to his strong push but also to the number of failures of the favorites due to the limiting conditions. Several of the main stars around defending champion Loic Bruni (FRA) fell on the slippery track or stalled in the deep mud.
In the junior women’s competition with only ten participants, Sophie Gutöhrle from Upper Austria won silver. The title fights, which were held without spectators due to the crown pandemic, ended with three medals for Austria. On Thursday, Mona Mitterwallner won gold in the youth cross country. Before Höll, who suffered two torn ligaments and a chipped bone in her ankle, Laura Stigger hadn’t started another ÖRV medal hope before Saturday’s U23 distance race. The Tyrolean had to go through a gastrointestinal illness.
