Suppliers report criticism

The Spar business group no longer wants to accept minimum order quantities from its suppliers. Spar asked for his understanding that “minimum order values will not be accepted with immediate effect and until further notice,” he quoted the “Standard” over the weekend from a letter from headquarters in Salzburg to suppliers.
At the same time, the supermarket chain requires its partners to be available at Christmas. As the newspaper reports, the Austrian retail group informs entrepreneurs in the letter that in the future it will not tolerate any delivery restrictions, business closures and products not available during the Christmas holidays. “If we reach the limit of our performance with our 45,000 employees, we can expect the same from our suppliers.”
Savings requirements lead to higher costs
For smaller manufacturers, the requirements would lead to higher costs, for example in logistics. Minimum order values also mean planning security for suppliers, which is particularly important when growing fruits and vegetables in season. Minimum order quantities are risky for grocery retailers if the products don’t sell well and the retailers keep the products.
Supply problems in the Christmas season
The trading company defended the letter against the “standard.” Spar experienced significant supply problems at some suppliers in early 2019. These would have been on a corporate holiday over Christmas. The grocery trade has absolute peak season during the holidays until the Three Kings. “It’s like a hotel in Schladming is closing in the middle of the semester break,” said press spokeswoman Nicole Berkmann.
