Vienna chooses: The first big vote in the shadow of Corona

The ballot boxes are related to the coronavirus pandemic, which also required extensive security measures. You can vote until 5pm. That is how long all the polling stations have been open. However, many city dwellers have already voted.

Unsurprisingly, more voting cards were issued than ever in the Vienna elections, that is, exactly 382,214. According to projectors, this means that around 40 percent of the votes are cast by mail, and only 60 percent on Sundays at polling stations. In fact, both the city and some of the leading candidates have recommended not visiting the electoral college. Those who appear there today must observe a series of protective measures.

Your own pen is recommended

Distance rules must be observed and mouth and nose protection must be worn, although it should be briefly removed for identification behind a Plexiglas screen. Bringing your own pen is also recommended. Delegates must ensure that the voting process runs smoothly. The virus has also frustrated the parties: All election ceremonies have been canceled.

Based on the latest polls, the ruling SP and Green parties are likely to win, with the Social Democrats likely to surpass the 40 percent mark. In 2015 it was slightly less, that is, 39.6 percent. The greens were at 11.8 percent.

Big losses for FP

However, the FP is expected to suffer heavy losses. They are far from their record of five years ago; at that time they could expect 30.8 percent of the vote. The forecasts look much more favorable for the vice president, who could move to second place after the record low of 2015 (9.2 percent).

According to polls, NEOS need not fear that they are no longer represented on the municipal council, but they can expect a small increase over 6.2 percent in their first Viennese elections. Heinz-Christian Strache’s performance is also eagerly awaited. The former head of FP, who resigned after the Ibiza video, enters the race with his own list, quite capable of entering the state parliament. The five percent hurdle must be taken for this.

First screenings around 6 pm

Polling stations close at 5 pm The first screenings are expected around 6 pm The preliminary general result (of the municipal council election) should be available between 8 pm and 9 pm The quantity that is already fixed is open: Given the record number of voting cards, which may not all be counted until Tuesday, the result could change significantly.
