Election day will be something like Austria has never seen before – if you want to cast your vote, you can only do so under strict security regulations. Therefore, many Viennese have played it safe and bought a voting card. A total of exactly 382,214 voting cards were issued, 1.8 times more than in the 2015 elections. A new record, with great effect: by the end of election night, up to 40 percent of the votes will not have been counted.
Green rejection
The end of the electoral campaign, which the last parties started yesterday Friday, was also dominated by Corona. The Greens had to cancel their event on short notice in the morning. An employee of the party headquarters who was jointly responsible for the party’s street election campaign had tested positive. Neither lead candidate Birgit Hebein nor any other candidate had contact with the person, she said.

The morning went as planned at the ÖVP: top candidate Gernot Blümel and Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, both recently on voluntary self-isolation after a Corona case at the Chancellery, appeared in front of the selected audience.
