Today, Saturday, the Krntner referendum will be held for the hundredth time. At the ceremony in Klagenfurt, Slovenian President Borut Pahor is expected to be the representative of the southern neighboring country for the first time.
Together with Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, he wants to speak at the Krntner Landhaus. In the run-up to the anniversary, the presidents advocated for European cooperation and the protection of respective minorities, including German-speaking people in Slovenia.
His participation in the commemoration of the Klagenfurt referendum is “swimming against the current” in view of the growing “differences of opinion at the national level, but also at the European level,” Pahor said. In the referendum on October 10, 1920, the southern part of the predominantly Slovenian-speaking country decided to become part of Austria. Contrary to guarantees, ethnic Slovenes were subjected to decades of policies of oppression and assimilation after the vote.
