Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many more Viennese who have never decided to cast their vote in the Vienna elections by mail. This year 382,214 voting cards were issued.
That’s 1.8 times more than in 2015 (203,874). 21,651 voting cards were issued to EU citizens who can only vote at the district level. In all, about 40 percent of the vote will be missing in the preliminary overall results on Sunday night.
Elections in Vienna: postal votes should be 40 percent
According to the projectors, the percentage of absentee votes will be just as high. These will only be counted on Monday. This year, given the record number and crown rules that district electoral authorities must observe, it could even take until Tuesday until the full results of the two elections are available.
In order to keep the risk of infection as low as possible, the city of Vienna heavily promoted voting by mail this year. Nearly a third (about 32 percent) of the 1,133,010 voters eligible for city council elections have chosen to vote away from the polling station.
Voting with the voting card
There were, and still are, several options: you can still throw the voting cards (completed and signed) in the mailboxes until Sunday at 9 am to the district electoral authorities. You can also carry them yourself or ask someone else to carry them. Additionally, you can deliver your absentee ballot to someone else on Sunday at any voting station, or you can fill out the voting card yourself, stamp it, and deliver it to any voting station.
A provision is also made in case a person entitled to vote has not collected his registered voting card from the post office in time: Voting cards are delivered to the electoral departments in the respective district and can be collected there even on Sunday until 5pm
