In the conflict over the Caucasus region of Nagorno-Karabakh, Russia had offered to mediate, now the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan have accepted the invitation. This Friday they will meet in Moscow to talk.

The Yerevan and Baku governments have confirmed the participation of their ministers, said a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, the RIA news agency reported. Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan from the Armenian capital Yerevan and Jeyhun Bayramov from the Azerbaijani capital Baku were expected.

On September 27, clashes broke out between the two states over Nagorno-Karabakh, in which many people have already died. Russian President Vladimir Putin called on the parties to the conflict to agree to a ceasefire and offered his country to mediate.

The Nagorno Karabakh region, which is predominantly inhabited by Armenian Christians, belongs to predominantly Islamic Azerbaijan under international law, but has resigned. With Armenia being supported by Russia and Azerbaijan from Turkey, the conflict in the South Caucasus threatens to escalate. Important oil and gas pipelines run there, through which Azerbaijan supplies the world market.
