The Kurds are freeing thousands of relatives of “Islamic State” terrorists from the Al Hol internment camp in northeastern Syria. One year after the Turkish invasion, the region is far from peace.
Istanbul. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan promised “peace and quiet” for northeast Syria when he sent his army across the border into the neighboring country a year ago. Turkey’s third military intervention in Syria since 2016 targeted the Kurdish YPG militia between the Euphrates and the Iraqi border. A “safety zone” was planned on Syrian soil where Syrian refugees from Turkey would settle. A year after the invasion began on October 9, 2019, Turkey missed most of the targets. The region is far from peace, there is no “safety zone”. Now, the Kurdish autonomy authorities in the area, harassed by the Turks, want to free 25,000 relatives of IS fighters from a camp.
